NGC graded, serialized and encapsulated silver billon antoninianus
(double-denarius) of scarce Roman Usurper Aureolus,
who attempted to steal the throne of Emperor Gallienus either for himself
or Gallic Emperor Postumus in 268 AD.

Obverse shows the right facing bust of Postumus, minted in Milan in his name
but without his authorization.  Reverse shows Fides seated.

Aureolus rose in the ranks under Gallienus and was given command of an elite
cavalry unit. He was used by the Emperor to quell a number of usurpers and insurrections.
He unsuccessfully tried to defeat the Emperor of the breakaway Gallic Empire, Postumus.
Afterwards, resentful of Gallienus demoting him and seeking to overthrow him, he encouraged
Postumus to make a play for the throne of Rome, with his support. He even pre-emptively
minted coins for himself under Postumus' name and image. Postumus rejected the offer,
and Gallienus turned his attentions on his betrayal, defeating him in battle.

Authenticated by the NGC, it was given the grade "ABOUT UNCIRCULATED" with a
3/5 for Strike and a 4/5 for Surface
