Josef Roth was born in Trieste, Austrian Empire on 12 October 1859, and he graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in 1879 and became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1898, Colonel in 1901, Major-General in 1908, and Lieutenant Field Marshal in 1912. During World War I, he led a corps at the Austro-Hungarian triumph at the Battle of Limanowa in southern Poland, and he also fought in the Gorlice-Tarnow Offensive. In September 1915, Roth was promoted to General der Infanterie, and he fought in the Battle of Asiago in Italy. His last triumph was at the Battle of Caporetto in 1917, after which he was promoted to Colonel-General in 1918. He retired on 31 December 1918 and died in 1927 at the age of 69.
