Franklin Park, a partially wooded 527-acre parkland in the Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Dorchester neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts and is Boston’s biggest park. Considered a country park when it was formed in the 19th century, Franklin Park is the largest and last component of the Emerald Necklace created by Frederick Law Olmsted and is considered the “crown jewel” of Olmsted’s work in Greater Boston.  It was originally known as “West Roxbury Park” before being named in honor of Boston-born patriot Benjamin Franklin.

The park brings together rural scenery, a woodland preserve, and an area for active recreation, and sports.  It has six mile of roads and fifteen miles of pedestrian and bridle paths to explore.  Much of Franklin Park is scenic and devoted to the general to the general use an enjoyment of the public.  The park also has Franklin Park Zoo, a picnic area, stone bridges, old stone ruins, and outcroppings of “Roxbury Puddingstone”, a rock formation that forms the bedrock underlying most of Roxbury, now part of the city of Boston.

Perhaps the most peaceful place in Franklin Park, is Scarboro Pond.  Next to the pond is a sloping hillside of huge century old beech trees. Two beautiful old stone bridges cross over the pond in different locations.  It is home to a large collection of water and migrating birds and is a favorite spot for walking or relaxing.

One of those old bridges is on the postcard, published by the “Mason Bros”, who were located in Boston” and published tricolor view cards of New England from 1907-17.  The card is in good condition with a dogged lower right corner and minor wear overall.  The image of “Boston Mass, Bridge and Scarboro Pond, Franklin Park” is clean, and clear.  The reverse is also clean.

The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
