Souvenir sheet of ESTONIA 1996 - XXVI Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta./108-03-1996


The souvenir sheet is dedicated to the 26th Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta and the centenary of the Olympic movement in the modern era. The first stamp in the souvenir sheet pictures the gold medal of the 1st Olympic Games of the modern era. The middle stamp represents the weightlifter Alfred Neuland, the first athlete to win an Olympic gold meddal for independent Estonia, at the Antwerp Games in 1920. Neuland, who introduced several novelties into the weightlifting sport, such as the snatch grip, the squat technique and the lock grip, is shown upholding the honour of Estonian sports. The third stamp is dedicated to sycling events, because of Estonian athletes success in cycling at recent Olympic Summer Games.
