About the Artist: Prince Rogers Nelson (7/6/1958 – 21/4/2016) known as Prince, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. The recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. Known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona, his wide vocal range and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, he often preferred to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, and hip hop. Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19. His 6th album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on Fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician releasing 39 albums during his life, and leaving behind a vast array of unreleased material.

Awards: Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The film soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Prince sold over 150 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Although pleasing to the eye, the overall sound quality of coloured vinyl and picture disc recordings are not always comparable to the (generally) better sounding black vinyl discs. Collectors often collect picture discs as much for the "rock art" visual enjoyment and/or rarity as for the sound quality.
