From the Puffs™ Collection, these classic double-sided clip-on earrings were a signature innovation & staple of Jordan Schlanger Sterling Silver collections.
This variation is based on the popular Small Egg Clip, with fluidly-sculpted lobes accentuating the abstract, modernist egg-like form.
These Pumpkin Clips, both the large & the small, were among the more popular of the series.
The sculpted design a bit reminiscent of the organic, voluptuous lobes of a pumpkin, hence the temporary working title which apparently stayed.
Actually the form is more like a 5-lobed hoop earring, since each graduated lobe curves around the form like a hoop, completed in back by the clip section.
The smooth, sculpted halves of this petite on-ear earring clip together securely & gently, visually forming a whole which surrounds the earlobe, & is meant to be seen from all angles.
This series of 2-sided clips were an answer to the ubiquitous clip-on 'button earring', most of which had the dreaded hardware in back which did the securing, and which were not supposed to be seen. This series was a solution to all that.
The innovation began with a superior method of hollow-forming, allowing for full-volume, lightweight egg-shells of fine silver instead of the typical solid castings or assembled stampings, which didn't have an open or flat back, as many cast earrings did.
An additional innovation, was the idea of making the clip part of the sculptural form, which both made the earring a fully-realized sculpture from all angles, and also evened out the pressure of the clip, making it much more comfortable & easier to wear.
There were perhaps a dozen different styles of these double-sided clips. All the designs were organic & sculptural, meant to reflect the forms of the body & to flow flatteringly with the wearer's anatomy.
Rarely do any of the 2-sided clips appear at auction, & if they do, they're often 'previously love' by the wearer. This pair is about perfect, being from the original sample line pair, aside from some tarnish & light handling as might be expected from a showroom sample.
Measuring about 1-1/4" high & 1" across, they are a bold yet compact, featherweight design. They are hallmarked with the designer's trademarked logo iside the front half.
The original price tag is attached showing $220 retail, c.2008 (about $310 today).
