RARE Lot of 10 Vintage Photos Identified From Illinois State Native American Excavation Project, Dickson Mound State Memorial, c.1950

DESCRIPTION: As near as I can figure this vintage set was put out around 1950 (judging from the age of the cars in the background of several of the photos), as tourist souvenirs or gifts for children, etc.

This mound and excavation was quite a find judging from the details in the various photos, and represents a nice collection of various vintage photographs. Each photo has a title/description written on it, with the identification of the Dickson Mound state memorial in Illinois. The native Americans in this area were of the Mississippian Group.

Photos measure 2 3/4" x 3 1/2". In excellent vintage condition.

Dickson Mounds is a native American settlement site and burial mound complex in Illinois, overlooking the Illinois River. Its use began in 800 a.d. and was active until 1250 a.d. It is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The owner of the land, Don Dickson, discovered it on his family farm and began excavation in 1927. None of the skeletons or findings were removed and a building was constructed to cover and protect the excavation site. The burial area was covered-up/re-buried/re-sealed by the state of Illinois in 1992, being replaced by a native American museum site.

These are roughly 75 year old photos, and no longer sold or available.
