Bunad – The Norwegian National Costume is a party and holiday costume that has its background in a folk costume (also called national costume). From the 1930s, expensive bunads from various parts of Norway have gradually become a common status outfit for ceremonial celebrations, especially among women.
"Bunad", from the Old Norse búnaðr which originally means "equipment", is a new word that from the 20th century has been used for several types of clothing in Norway, primarily for modern, historicizing party costumes in the national romantic tradition. These were constructed in the first half of the 20th century and were inspired by the regional costumes of the Norwegian peasant population in the 18th–19th centuries, outfits and garments which in turn were imitations of earlier European fashion.
