Summary: "The Amityville Horror" follows the events of the Lutz family, who move into 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. The house had been the site of a mass murder committed by Ronald DeFeo Jr. one year prior (1974). They experience strange and unexplainable events, leading them to believe that the house is (very!) haunted. The story has great pacing and is a genuinely scary read. It follows sudden, inexplicable occurrences and disturbing incidents that erode the family's personalities as they try to escape from diabolical horror. The book is based on the (claims of) paranormal experiences by the Lutz family. It was sold as "a true story" and adapted some of the Lutz's original claims.

About the Author: Jay Anson (1921-1980) was an American author best known for this novel, The Amityville Horror.  Anson was a writer for Professional Film Services, where he wrote promotional shorts for theatrical features such as "Klute" in New York and "Deliverance". He also wrote several other books including "The Curse of Hopewell House" (1978) and "Beyond Amityville" (1979). Anson's writing style is described as visual, with vivid descriptions of characters and settings. He was praised for his ability to capture the suspenseful atmosphere of the story in his writing.

Reception: The Amityville Horror has sold around 10 million copies from its numerous editions and formed the basis of a series of films released from 1979 onward.
