ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Mega-Ultra-Rare Antique 1913 Elegantly Hand-Colored “Thistle Facsimile” (Waterol) Lithograph Depicting the Famous Standing Portrait Painting of the Beautiful Lady Known as ‘Mrs. C.’ titled, “Lady With The White Shawl” (AKA “Portrait of Mrs. C.” or simply “Mrs. C.”), after the original 1893 oil on canvas painting by the famous listed painter, ‘William Merritt Chase, N.A.’ (American, 1849-1916), whose original painting is in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), acquired in 1895 through the Joseph E. Temple Fund.

About the Painting:

As stated from the PAFA museum: “There has been much speculation about the identity of the subject of this portrait, whom Chase described as "the perfect type of American womanhood." It has been suggested that she was Chase's wife or perhaps Emily Jewell Clark, a wealthy art collector. The same unnamed woman appears in several of Chase's other undated paintings of the period: "The Opera Cloak (Grand Rapids Museum of Art, Michigan), Portrait of a Lady in White (private collection), and "A Lady in Evening Dress" (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). One of the artist's favorite models during the early 1890s was Minnie Clark, also a frequent subject for the popular magazine illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, who used her features in creating his famous "Gibson Girl." Chase's use of only the subject's initial and a generic title for the Pennsylvania Academy's painting suggests a similar tendency to conceive of his portrait as an ideal type. "Portrait of Mrs. C." was one of sixteen works by Chase shown in the annual exhibition of 1894 at the Pennsylvania Academy. The portrait was also shown abroad in Paris (1899 and 1900) and in Berlin (1908). in such exhibitions , Chase's work was often hung next to the society portraits of John Singer Sargent because both artists were adept at suggesting the suavity and aloofness of the upper class with their elegant costumes and haughty poses.”

Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s info tag is still thankfully with the piece and is adhered (glued) to the backing stock for the Print in the upper-left corner area with the DPC Trademark “Thistle” logo (thistle within an oval swoop) & Registration info at the top of it, and it reads: ‘WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE, N.A., “LADY WITH THE WHITE SHAWL”, The Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts, Copyright Detroit Publishing Co.’, and the DPC copyright & name, ‘Copyright Detroit Publishing Co.’, appears printed very small lower-right in the image corner on the Print itself with a tinier & fainter copyright just above it (same text) and whose inventory number ‘050269’, is printed lower-left in the image corner respectively on the Litho, which was published on November 14, 1913 by the DPC. The Print itself is drymounted onto a stiff thin backing substrate (cardboard) which was then adhered to its larger cream-colored heavy-weight wove paper backing stock which has a decorative blind-embossed thin line border around the Print, and the DPC’s embossed “Thistle” logo appears lower-middle in the outer margin area of the backing stock which is watermarked ‘Alexandra Japan, Made in U.S.A’ paper. We sold many of these antique early 1900’s “Thistle Waterol” prints back-in-the-day for $12- which equals $360- in today’s dollar for 2023—certainly not cheap!!! These larger version hand-colored “Thistle Waterol” lithographs are extremely rare to find on the open market as the DPC didn’t produce a lot of them in the early 1900’s. More can be read on the “Thistle Facsimile” (Waterol) process below from the Detroit Publishing Co., and their company history.

Size & Condition: The size mounted is 30-1/2” x 24-3/4”, Litho size is 20-9/16” x 14-7/16”. The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this gorgeous piece—rich, delicate & detailed hand-coloring. This litho has been tucked away in our archive drawers amongst other antique lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family way back-in-the-day and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘MINT’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. This will look stunning all framed up and will make the perfect addition to any William Merritt Chase or American art collection! No foxing evident and no real or discernable toning of the stock from age! No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous litho itself with the small exception of one ultra-tiny dog-ear band in the lower-left corner and ultra-minimal outer edge-wear with a few dents & dings here & there which are all hardly noticeable and not even really worth mentioning. There is some wear on the info tag and backing stock, which has basically been protecting the Litho this whole time, with some noticeable creasing in the outer backing stock margin areas, along the outer margin edges & margin corners, as well as some small tears along the outer backing stock edges which come nowhere close to the Litho itself—all outer backing stock margin issues are completely negligible since it does not affect the actual drymounted Litho and since they can (and should) be easily trimmed off and/or can be easily matted & framed out. This beautiful antique hand-colored “Thistle Waterol” Litho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Note: This Litho will be shipped flat & hardpacked due to it being mounted & oversized with No International Shipping for this piece.

"THISTLE FACSIMILES" are copies in full color. Two methods are used, the one chosen being that which gives the best translation of the original. No known single medium gives the best translation of all classes of subjects. The proper function of the reproducer, therefore, is to select the medium best adapted for copying the original. The Aäc process (exclusively controlled by us [Photochrom process]) preserves the drawing of the original with photographic exactness, and gives a verity and range of color tone not secured by any other method. It is absolutely permanent. The “Waterol” print (produced by a photographic base with oil and water color carefully rubbed in by hand) attains a delicacy and softness of tone specially desirable for some subjects.” (From: archive’s online catalogue, Thistle Publications: Office Catalogue of Works of Art Reproduced From Eleven Leading Galleries of the United States and Many Private Collections, Detroit Publishing Company, Detroit, MI, 1912).

History of the Detroit Photographic/Publishing Company: The Detroit Photographic/Publishing Company (DPC) was one of the world’s largest publishers and best producers of photographic images. In the late 1800’s, the Detroit Photographic Co., as it was known then, acquired the exclusive rights to the Swiss created ‘Photochrom’ process. A Photochrom (or Aäc process) is a photomechanical process using multiple lithographic stones to convert an original black & white photograph into a color print. A separate stone was used for each color and a minimum of 4 stones were required for each color print, although as many as 14 stones could have been used if needed. This entire process allowed the DPC to mass produce and sell color prints, postcards and albums, to the American public.

The most famous American landscape photographer to work for the DPC and who was also a partner in the firm was William Henry Jackson (American, 1843-1942). Jackson joined the firm in 1897 and his already prolific work brought over 10,000 negatives to the company’s huge inventory and he helped them sell millions of prints for them annually. By 1903, Jackson became plant manager which afforded him very little time for travel and taking photographs.

The company was first known as the Photochrom Company of Detroit in 1895 and they officially maintained the name until 1898 when it became known as the Detroit Photographic Company. The name later changed to the Detroit Publishing Company in 1905. Numerous well-known photographers worked for them over their 30 year time period between the years 1895-1924. Their photographers traveled all over the globe and helped Americans to see the world around them. They would also purchase negative plates from different photographers to add to their inventory. The DPC created some of the most beautiful images ever caught on film, and their scenic photos inspired travel amid the rapidly growing tourism market of the early 1900’s. The images would often incorporate people as part of the scenery set against awe-inspiring landscapes, cityscapes and various backdrops. To say the least they were majestic and mysterious to not only the common traveler but world travelers alike and often resembled paintings. The company’s images were so popular, that they created a multitude of products and souvenirs to aggressively sell them. The DPC also expanded their collection to include reproductions of famous works of art which served not only as home décor, but was also in demand as educational tools for schools and universities.

During the height of its success, the DPC maintained markets in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, London, and Zurich. They continued to expand their lines by selling images in popular boutiques, tourist spots, and also through mail-order. During World War I, sales of photographs and postcards began to decline. With the advent of newer, inexpensive methods of printing that were being used by competing firms, it eventually took its toll on the DPC and it forced the company into receivership by 1924. After struggling for the next eight years, the DPC finally liquidated all of its assets in 1932. Jackson later sold all of the DPC company negatives and prints to The Edison Institute (known today as Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan) in 1939. The Institute held the negatives until 1949, when they were then donated and divided between the Colorado Historical Society (images ‘west of the Mississippi’, about 13,000 images), and the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division (All other views, about 20,000 vintage photographs, 25,000 glass negatives, and about 300 Photochrom Prints). The Greenfield Village museum still maintains 18,000 vintage photographic prints, 9,500 postcards, and 2,500 Photochrom prints (Rewritten & compiled chronologically by Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, NY, meibohmfinearts)

We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
