This pin was issued and sold in 1968 to raise funds and support for the Freedom & Peace Party candidate for U.S. Senate from the state New York: Herman G Ferguson.
Ferguson was the only black candidate for US Senate in 1968.
During the campaign, Ferguson was convicted of conspiring to murder moderate black political leaders and sentenced to 3.5 to 7 years of jail time. {In 1967, he and fellow members of the Jamaica Rifle and Pistol Club (in queens, NY), were arrested and charged with the planned assassination of two prominent civil rights leaders.}
Ferguson then fled the U.S., and he and his wife (3 years
later) began a life in Guyana, working in the field of education.
The Freedom and Peace Party was the New York State version of the Peace and Freedom Party which originated in California.
