Date Printed: 1955

Description: George Hartley and his wife Jean founded The Marvell Press, named for Hull poet Andrew Marvell, and published LISTEN, a quarterly poetry magazine, beginning in 1954. The magazine quickly attracted contributions from Kingsley Amis, D J Enright, Donald Davie, and, crucially, Philip Larkin, who moved to Hull at about this time.

A very attractive example of this early edition. Original soft paper covers, with cover design by Quatrezoneilles. 24 pages. In very attractive condition with no obvious sign of wear (see pictures). Internally clean and bright. Small code number to the title page (see picture).  A very nice example of this scarce item.

This edition includes Larkin's "Referred Back" - "Oliver's Riverside Blues it was. And now / I shall, I suppose, always remember how / The flock of notes those antique negros blew / Out of Chicago air......"
