While it's true that much of this disc has that "old kook on the corner" vibe, Kevin Coyne's songs posses a tremendous amount of humor, heart, and humanity. SUGAR CANDY TAXI is the trump card that separates him from legions of other crackpots and visionaries. These songs are conceived and performed extemporaneously and have a bluesy and folky feel. And while one might think that this approach would tend to send the compositions spiraling off into Beefheartian weirdness, they stay remarkably on target. Kevin Coyne taps into something primal, as timeless as an old blues standard or a nursery rhyme and just as mysterious.
