About Premium Green - Superior quality lawn seed

Lawn UK's flagship lawn seed blend, Premium Green.

Premium Green is our flagship lawn seed mixture. Bentgrass and slender creeping red fescue are blended together in perfect proportion to produce a fine leaved mixture with a superior finish. The mixture is quite slow growing, but does like regular mowing with a cylinder mower to keep a good appearance. Premium Green will also tolerate light shade.

Often considered to be a bowling green style lawn, this premium grass seed mixture is perfect for an aspiring greens keeper. We recommend feeding Premium Green regularly in order to maintain optimum visual appearance throughout the year.

Premium Green is the product of 10 years development.

Professional use: Golf greens, first class bowling greens.

How to prepare the ground

Preparing the ground for your grass seed

Firstly, mark out the area that you wish to sow. It's a good idea to use pegs and string. Remove all rubbish and debris before you start work to prepare the soil.

Depending on the size of the area, you can either dig by hand, or hire in a rotavator. You'll ideally want a good fine seedbed, without any large lumps of soil. Remove any large stones as these can cause havoc with lawn mowers in the future!

After you've initially dug the soil, it's important to make sure that the lawn is level and that the soil is firm.

Finally, a few days before you sow the seed a pre-seeding fertiliser such as ‘Grow More' should be raked into the soil. This will stimulate root growth and provide the essential early feed to get the lawn off to a good start.

How to grow your grass seed

New lawns

To get a good establishment, 70 grams of seed per m2 (2 oz per square yard) is recommended. Measure the area and allow a little bit extra for subsequent filling in or patching that may be necessary at a later stage. You could also grow a small area somewhere else in your garden so that you have a ready supply of matching turf for any repair work that may be required.

An easy way of sowing the seed is to divide the area into easily manageable sections. Next, divide the seed into as may lots as there are sections. Then sow half the seed for each section one way, from the left to the right of the section. Following this, sow the other half across the first sowing from the front to the back of the section. This will help to ensure that you get an even spread of types of seed over the area.

Alternatively, you can buy a distributor available from our online store. (These can be used for putting down lawn seed as well as fertilisers.) Again, go over the area one way and then repeat at right angles to ensure proper distribution of the seed. When you have sown your seed, rake it in lightly and, depending on weather conditions, your lawn will begin to show in 14 – 21 days.

Improving existing lawns

Similarly to seeding a new lawn, it's really important to prepare your existing lawn before applying any new seed. Rake or scarify the lawn to open up the existing grass, allowing the new seed to reach the soil. Broadcast the seed evenly over the surface at a rate of approximately 50g per sqaure metre.

It's much easier to do this using a calibrated spreader, or a broadcaster. Once you've sown the new seed, roll or lightly tread the soil to ensure good contact and coverage. It's best to try and keep off your lawn for 3-4 weeks after sowing so as not to damage any of the new plants.
