TYPES OF GLASS

Translucent Glass: (TRA.) (Also known as cathedral glass) is a thin translucent sheet rolled by a machine or blown by mouth. These sheets are usually one colour, and textured on one side. Ideal for windows and doors, because of how easily it lets light pass through. Popular for windows, suncatchers and jewellery.

Streaky: (STR.) Hand formed streaks of translucent and opaque colour across a translucent glass base. The surface is smooth and easy to cut. Popular complement to translucent glass allications.

Stippled: (STI.) Stipple is a mechanical process to create small dimples on the glass surface to create a waxy ice-like effect. Also because of the way colours are streaked together it appears to have a 3D effect when it is illuminated from behind. The effect is reminiscent of the effect of the original Tiffany's lamps.

Wispy: (WIS.) Wispy glass has the appearance of thin smokey streaks in an otherwise translucent glass panel. It is made by mixing an opaque glass with a translucent glass base. Great for a smoky effect in windows, and other light catching projects.

Opalescent or Opal : (OPA.)  Opalescent glass recognised by its opacity, as light does not easily pass through it. Our glass comes in different degrees of transparency and sometimes with a soft glowing appearance It is made using either one colour or by swirling a combination of two to four colours together. Opal glass is popular for stained glass lamp shades and mosaic works.

Iridescent: (IRI.): Has a glittery reflective sheen sometimes of a different colour to the base colour. It is crafted by using a metallic treatment on translucent or opalescent glass. A layer of metallic oxide is added to the hot glass surface, resulting in a shimmering effect as it bonds. This glass can’t be fused as it will lose its iridescent sheen.

Textured: (TEX.) Also called patterned glass, decorative glass, or obscure glass, has a pattern stamped or rolled on one side of the glass. This allows light to pass through it, but visibility is distorted due to the surface pattern. Textured glass can be applied to any of the colour glass and typically the other side of the glass is left smooth.
