Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an American park that conserves an area of large sand dunes up to 750 feet tall on the eastern edge of the San Isabel National Forest, and an adjacent national preserve in the Sangre de Cristo Range, in south-central Colorado.

It was originally designated the “Great Sand Dunes National Monument” in 1932 by President Herbert Hoover.  The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America and cover an area of about 30 sq miles.  Sediments from the surrounding mountains filled the valley over geologic time.  After lakes within the valley receded, exposed sand was blown by the predominant southwest winds toward the Sangre de Cristos, eventually forming the dune field over an estimated tens of thousands of years.

This is a beautiful card, published by the “Sanborn Souvenir Co., Denver” and it is hard to tell if it is painted.  The card is postmarked 1938 in Montrose Colorado and is in excellent condition with very minor wear and a clean, clear image of what looks like the edge of the dunes. The reverse is written on and is clean.

The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.  Corrections appreciated.
