Moodytron

Moodytron is an electronic string instrument and sound generator. It does not use string vibrations to create tones. Instead tone is changed when one or two slides are moved up and down the strings and the sound reminds much of that of a Theremin (sinewave osciallator).

The Moodytron has three strings and you create a tone by bridging the middle string with one of the outer strings. It can produce two independent tones at the same time and you may use it with one or with two slides. If you move a slide against the tuning screws, you get a higher pitch. If you move it towards the box you get lower pitch. Note! 12v power supply. Power supply is not included.

There is about 0.1 V voltage across the middle wire.

We wanted to keep it simple and free from internal effects, but you can of course connect to an effect pedal or audio processor such as chorus or flanger.

The Moodytron has six control knobs. You can adjust Pitch, Intensity (volume) and Response for the two strings. You can set the Pitch so that the strings produce exactly the same tone if a slide is held over all three strings. You can also turn them off a bit to get a chorus effect. Response determines the rise time, that is, how long it takes for the tone to grow to full strength (which is set by the Intensisty knob) after the bridge is applied. A long response time gives a slightly more stable tone, and contact bounce and impurities on the bridge do not cause the tone to stick away and sway, which can happen if response is set to min.

The effect has also two octave-switches and it can shift the tone one octave down. One switch for each string.

Moodytron was initially a project that we sketched out with Nils Olof Carlin 2014. Scott Langenfeld then made the boards. Now the project has gained new energy with Dan Åkghagen's design of board. The circuit has been given some new functions such as that the tone comes gradually when the slide is held against the string. This reduces transients and contact bounces and it sounds more comfortable.
