5 Piece Vintage c.1978 American Tourister Verylite Luggage Set, Soft Sided Brown
  • This set was originally owned by Mr. Alan Snow, the president of Fellows Corporation, Springfield, Vermont, a division of Emhart Machinery Group from 1974 until 1987 when it was purchased by Goldman Industrial Group.
  • The set bears tags dated 1975 and 1978 as noted below.
  • It is from the American Tourister "The Verylite" product line of light weight bags.  I found advertising for them from 1977.
  • Construction is patterned brown faux leather (possibly vinyl, but I'm not sure), with brown fabric interiors, chrome zippers with padlock loops and other chrome hardware, interior straps, pockets and compartments, plastic corner protectors, American Tourister (AT) badges affixed to the exterior, some AT tags, and some unlocked AT combination padlocks (I didn't test the combos or lock functionality so the locks are sold as is).
  • Condition is good overall with working zippers.  All will have normal edge wear marks and scuffs from previous use.  Any notable issues found are noted below.
  • General dimensions given below exclude the handles and other parts attached to the bag and are meant to give a sense of the relative size of the bag in question.
  1. Extra large suitcase: 30" wide x 20-1/2" high x 10" deep, working zippers, missing combo lock (the chain is still there), AT luggage tag, AT badge, clean interior, interior compartment with snap strap in lid, good interior buckle straps (2), and an interior removeable stretch pocket.  The exterior has a prominent spot of wear and other minor points of wear on the lid (aside from edge rubs and light scuffs that are present).  Tag dated 1978.
  2. Large suitcase: 27" wide x 19" high x 9-1/2" deep, working zippers, unlocked combo lock, AT luggage tag, AT badge, clean interior, interior compartment with snap strap in lid, good interior buckle straps (2), and an interior removeable stretch pocket.  The exterior has a prominent spot of wear and other minor points of wear on the lid (aside from edge rubs and light scuffs that are present).  Tag dated 1978.
  3. Medium suitcase: 25" wide x 18" high x 8" deep, working zippers, unlocked combo lock, AT luggage tag, AT badge, clean interior, interior compartment with snap strap in lid, good interior buckle straps (2), but no interior removeable stretch pocket.  The exterior is relatively free of notable wear (aside from edge rubs and light scuffs that are present).  Tag dated 1975.
  4. Small suitcase: 22" wide x 14" high x 7-1/2" deep, exterior flap compartment with decorative buckle (missing part of the latch), working zippers, unlocked combo lock, AT luggage tag, AT badge, clean interior, and good interior buckle straps (3), and an interior removeable stretch pocket.  The lid and exterior flap were originally reinforced inside with plastic panels that have now broken up and the pieces move about inside the lid like a rain stick (the other suitcases above don't have this issue, but the suit bag below does).  I found no way to remove them without cutting at the fabric, so I'll leave that up to you.  The suitcase will work fine the way it is, except for the missing flap latch part noted above (you might try installing a snap).  Tag dated 1978.
  5. Suit bag: 23-1/2" wide x 21" high x 5" deep folded closed, 23-1/2" wide x 47" high x 4" deep unfolded, working side latches, working zipper with latch, hanging hook on chain, hanger loop (no hangers), no combo lock, AT luggage tag, AT badge, clean interior, two exterior (when bag is unfolded) lower compartments with working latches, and good interior buckle strap.  The left flap has a 2" tear at the top at the seam.  Like the small suitcase above, some interior plastic panels that give the top edge more shape are starting to break up.  This doesn't limit the use of the bag since it just takes away some shape and stiffness to the top parts.  The exterior is relatively free of notable wear (aside from edge rubs and light scuffs that are present).  No date tag found.
The suitcases nest inside each other for compact storage and shipping.  To keep shipping costs to a minimum, we will simply wrap the suitcases with commercial shipping stretch wrap and ship them unboxed.  The suit bag will have to ship separately, and we will fold it in half at a natural point to do so, and wrap it as above.  If you would like to pay to have the lot packed into boxes for shipping, please message us for a shipping quote.
