	ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra-Rare Vintage 1967 Large Format Color ‘Collograph Print’ (Collotype) Lithograph of a U.S. 3-Masted Packet/Passenger Ship “The Great Western” from the ‘Black Ball Line’ Coming into the New York Harbor at the Mouth of the Hudson River titled, “The Great Western Entering New York Harbor” (AKA Real title: “The Black Ball Line 'Great Western' in the Approaches to New York”), after the original oil on canvas painting by the world-renowned listed maritime painter, ‘John Stobart’ (British, 1929-2023) whose printed signature, ‘Stobart’, appears lower-right in the image corner, and who just passed sadly away this month on March 2, 2023 at the age of 93. About the Ship & Painting: “The Great Western” was a full-rigged ship built in 1851 and was part of the Black Ball Line (originally known as the Wright, Thompson, Marshall, & Thompson Line, then as the Old Line) which was a passenger line founded by a group of New York Quaker merchants headed by Jeremiah Thompson, and included Isaac Wright & Son (William), Francis Thompson and Benjamin Marshall. It was designed & built by the well-known ship-builder, William H. Webb in New York for trans-Atlantic travel. At the time of her maiden voyage, the packet ship the Great Western was the largest vessel in the line at 230 feet long, 43 feet beam, and registered at 1443 tons/BRT (BRT=Brutto Register Tons/Same as GRT=Gross Register Tons) and sailed from 1851-1882. She was a fast and reliable ship, capable of carrying 900 passengers (20 first-class berths, 90 persons in second class, and the remainder in a lower deck - steerage.) She served in the Black Ball Line until 1878, when the company ceased operations. Her final trip from Liverpool arrived in New York on Jan 16, 1878, and a few months later the Black Ball Line ceased operations and sold its assets. By that time, the efficiency and cost of travel by sailing ship was eclipsed by steamships and railroads. The Great Western was sold to the Seattle Coal and Transport Company and departed New York in July 1878 for San Francisco. She began transporting coal between Seattle and San Francisco, becoming a servant to the very steam locomotives which replaced her. In June 21, 1882, while she was at the Long Wharf in Oakland (the western terminus of the Central Pacific Railroad), she was destroyed in a fire that originated in a warehouse and also consumed the British bark the Norman. The loss of the Great Western and her cargo, valued at $40,000 in 1882 (estimated $1.02 million in 2020), was partially offset by selling her remains for salvage. She was purchased for $4,000 by William Mighell and towed to Saucelito, where she was beached and fully burned to render her iron works for salvage. An "epitaph" published in the Helena (MT) Weekly Herald states that she "sailed in the Black Ball line twenty-nine years, making 116 trips between New York and Liverpool without losing a sail, a spar or a member of her crew.” (Sources: Wikipedia; molydaniel site, google cache, “Rabbit Holes & things that amuse me: Coming to America, The Packet Ship The Great Western”) About the Painting: Stobart’s painting depicts a port side view of the second fastest packet ship of the era underway in stiff winds and heavy seas, with whitecaps splashing to the faux gunports, and men in the rigging furling the trademark black ball sail. A crowd has gathered on deck as they pass the harbor buoy, with New York on the left, and a string of five signal flags on the stern for the pilot and harbormaster. Stobart’s original painting for “The Great Western Entering New York Harbor” sold art auction for $12,870 back in 2016 under its original real title, “The Black Ball Line 'Great Western' in the Approaches to New York”, and the original Kennedy Gallery label indicated that it was from the estate of Horace Havemeyer, III (1942-2014), founding publisher of the internationally recognized design & architecture-concentrated magazine, Metropolis (Bellerophon Publications). Publisher & Print Info: The publisher copyright info, name & location, ‘Copyright Aaron Ashley, Inc., Yonkers, N.Y.’, appears printed lower-left in the outer margin area just beneath the image and their typical additional copyright with company initials and location, ‘© A.A. Inc., N.Y.’, appears printed lower-left in the image corner (tough to see in dark area of water) and the printing location, ‘Made in Switzerland’, appears lower-left in the outer margin corner respectively; The inventory number, title & artist’s name, ‘No. 974, The Great Western Entering New York Harbor, by John Stobart’, appears printed lower-middle, and the print type, ‘A Collograph Print [in banner]’, appears lower-right respectively. The Collotype was published on December 13, 1967 and the ‘Author of Reproduction’ was the well-known Swiss publishers & printers, Roto/Sadag S.A., of Geneva, Switzerland (Publisher & Printer, c1935-1996) and the Litho is printed on a nice smooth heavier-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 30-1/2” x 42-7/16”, Image size is 26-3/8” x 38-7/8”. The Collograph Print is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—beautiful rich color & tones. This Litho has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No foxing evident! Only one very tiny & completely negligible triangle piece missing (paper-loss) measuring 3/8”x5/8”x3/4” in the bottom outer margin area near the corner, and is negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Extremely minimal, very slight & very small crescent-creases and a couple crinkle-creases scattered here & there in the image area which are basically only lightly noticeable from the back and aren’t really worth mentioning either. Other slight creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas and in a couple outer margin corners with some associated small dog-ear bends in the corners too and some minimal outer margin edge wear with some dents & dings here & there—all of which, as previously mentioned, are negligible as well since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no real toning of the paper stock from age, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This vintage Collotype has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
