Original Oil Painting: Snow Leopard. Post-Impressionist Style, sold by the artist.

Oil on canvas, framed, approximately 20 x 16 inches or 50 x 40 cm.

A portrait in muted, earthy colours: warm green, buff, cool yellow, grey, brown and white. I used a rag to give the background some texture, and different brushes to build up the fur. Cats always seem wrong without their whiskers, but they have to be done last - very frustrating!

I like the sense of narrative in this piece - what are those sharp eyes looking at? What’s about to happen? The falling snow provides a sense of time captured too.

I love the vibrancy and viscosity of oil paint. My themes come from the nature around us and from travel and people watching. A 19th century studies graduate, my favourite artists are Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Picasso and Hopper.

In my painting I aim to use joyful palettes and I’m interested in the indication of form in the mind’s eye. In portraits especially I like to have a sense of narrative, capturing a moment of emotion or thought.
