Description:
This listing is for a stunning engraved Shell, dating from France during the 1870s-80s. These shells are classed as folk-art, having been engraved by amateur artisans with pictures of fisher-folk engaged in daily chores at the sea side. The shell is in almost perfect condition - an amazing survivor of over a century and very collectable. It is inscribed "Le Treport" - which is a seaside resort in Normandy, France.   It depicts a fisher-woman carrying a basket and net, gazing out to sea. In the background is the vast ocean, and on the horizon, two boats coming towards the shore. The engraving is very fine, with cross-hatching and linear detail. The ocean is represented by horizontal lines, while the natural indentations of the shell itself are reflected in the swirls and patterns along the edge of the shell, which has been incised to create a pretty edging. An old wire hanger is placed on the back and top of the Shell. The colours of the shell range from pearly cream to mauve-brown.

This listing is one of a pair, but being sold separately as the other shell is cracked. A discount price for both if purchased together.
