Vintage AAA “Penlight” batteries
manufactured by Burgess Battery Co. in Freeport, Illinois.
The company was founded
in 1917 and located in Madison, Wisconsin by Charles F. Burgess (1873-1945), who
developed what would become the “C” and “D” batteries.
In 1925, Burgess
purchased a manufacturing plant and moved operations to Freeport. During World
War II, employment reached 1,000, but Burgess died unexpectedly of a heart
attack in 1945.
Sold several times beginning
in 1958, by the mid-1980s, the workforce had dropped to 100 and the plant was
shuttered in 1989.
Batteries are inoperable. They are the standard AAA size, approximately 1 ¾” long x 3/8” in diameter.
Combined shipping: Combined shipping is available on multiple
purchases upon request.
That means that if an
order contains at least one item with a shipping charge, although other items
in the order are listed with free shipping, there will be a charge--the lowest
possible given the combined items.
Condition assessment: Any conditions assigned to items listed for
sale are based on a conservative, albeit amateur, opinion, so please examine
available images closely and come to your own conclusion.
Take care to note
whether this auction is one in which multiple copies of the same or similar
items are being sold individually, and that the price listed
is for one of the items rather than all the items which might appear in a group
photo.
Multiple-copy listings: On listings where multiple copies of the same
item are listed, labels associated with a color such as "Item
Name-Yellow” or “Item Name-Purple" refer only to the color of
the background used for identification purposes.
Smoke-free inventory: All items have been stored in a smoke-free
environment.
