This is a wonderful vintage 1920s Japanese sushi set consisting of five handmade carved lacquered plates, six combination knife/forks, stored in the original case as sold by the Matsuzakaya Department Store in the 1915-1930 period.  The plates measure 5.875" in diameter and are in excellent condition as shown in the photographs.  The six knife/fork combos measure 4" long and look like they never were used.  The solid, fabric-covered case measures 14" by 7.5" and is about 2.25" deep.  As found, the set was missing a plate and the set of 5 appear never to have been used as they were separated by what seems to have been the original tissue paper.  That Matsuzakaya Department Store is one of the earliest in Japan and dates back to the 17th century when they produced lacquerware and kimonos.  In 1910, they opened a  western-style department store and broadened their offerings.  This set is an unusual find, displays well and would be a welcome addition to your collection.
