Hasui & His Contemporaries: The Collection of Irwin J. Pachter

Skinner is honored to present a pristine collection of over 100 pre-earthquake and pre-war prints featuring works by Japanese painter and shin hanga printmaker Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). Hasui and his Contemporaries: The Collection of Irwin J. Pachte attests to the late collector’s keen eye, his understanding of the shin hanga print and its technical innovations, and his discipline in selecting prints in the best condition. The November auction will mark the collection’s first appearance in public since it was last exhibited at the Everson Museum of Art and the University of Michigan Museum of Art in 1986.

According to Judith Dowling, Director of Asian Works of Art at Skinner, “Not only are many of these very rare prints, but they are in fine condition, having remained in controlled storage for nearly three decades. We’re very excited to offer this world-class collection to the public.”

Additional highlights from the collection include early and excellent examples by Hiroshi Yoshida and three extremely rare prints by Ito Shinsui.

Dr. Pachter, who passed away on September 4 at the age of 89, perfectly summed up his collection in 1986 when he said, “It’s going to leave you singing… there are so many colors.”
