Habitat: Barberry is native to Europe and Asia, and can be found growing wildly from Canada to Pennsylvania. Because it is such an adaptable plant, its habitat is extremely varies as any soil and condition is conducive to its growth. When left to grow wild it can grow as tall as 7 to 10 feet high. Barberry prefers areas of full sunlight with some partial shade.
Plant Description: Barberry is a deciduous shrub, growing up to 4 meters in height. It has a gray-yellow, grooved stem and thorny branches.
Leaves are borne in clusters of two to five, usually small and oval, toothed along the margins. Flowers are bright yellow, produced on long panicles from April to June.
The fruits are oblong red berries, produced in dark drooping bunches during autumn.
The flowers turn into drooping, dark red berries in the fall.
