Lengthy and detailed manuscript letter sent from Macao, China by Presbyterian missionary Andrew P. Happer (1818-1894), dated June 4, 1845, describing his work as a teacher to Chinese students. Sent to his sister, Sarah Happer Galt of Springfield, Illinois. Single sheet, folded. 3 closely written pages of text with address panel. Folded, with some separation and splitting at folds, with a few small areas of paper loss. Still fully legible. This letter, written at the start of his career in China, describes his educational work as one of the first American missionaries in Macao, which had only recently allowed in foreigners following the First Opium War. Following this period in Macao, he moved to Canton where he opened another school as well as medical dispensary, and went on to found Canton Christian College. Approximately 1000 words, with nearly all of the text being related to his efforts to learn Chinese and instruct his Chinese pupils in English with the aid of Chinese teachers.
