Large Roman Carved Steatite Dog Cameo 1st - 5th Century AD

This is an extremely rare & large Roman carved black steatite cameo of a recumbent dog, circa 1st - 4th century AD.

The dog is depited in relief with well defined features, musculature & incised fur. With a grooved rim for a bezel setting. This type of Roman cameo was carved in a range of materials, see similar examples in the British Museum collection, Bonhams 28th Oct 2009 lot 323, Christies 10th Dec 2015 lot 40. The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
