ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Ultra-Rare Antique 1907 German Chromolithograph Depicting Rechberg Mountain & The 13th Century Hohenrechberg Castle (Burg Hohenrechberg located in Schwäbisch Gmünd) in The Foreground and Looking Towards Hohenstaufen Mountain & Its Village of Göppingen in the Distance After a Thunderstorm—located in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany (along with the 3rd, Stuifen Mountain [not depicted]), which together, forms the well-known ‘Three Kaiser Mountains’ (Drei Kaiserberge, AKA Three Emperor Mountains), and the Chromolitho is Aptly titled, “Rechberg u. Hohenstaufen” (“Rechberg and Hohenstaufen”), after the original painting by the well-known listed painter, ‘Walter Strich-Chapell’ (German, 1877-1960), whose printed signature & date, ‘Strich-Chapell 1907’, appears printed lower-right in the image corner (tough to see in dark shadow area). We currently have another rare chromolitho by Strich-Chapell listed, so please have a look!

Historical Mentions of the Published Chromolithos (Translated from German): In the publication, Der Türmer, Vol. 10, Issue 1, October 1907, there was an advertisement-mention of new lithographs on the market for that year by the original publishers, the well-known *Greiner und Pfeiffer Publishing House in Stuttgart (Printers & Publishers, 1841-1932), titled, Landscapes from Swabia: Stuttgart, Greiner and Pfeifferthey described Strich-Chapell’s litho “Rechberg u. Hohenstaufen” with a few excerpts, “…Hohenstaufen at least arouses strong feelings in every German. In addition, this landscape is of a downright typical character for German nature. A wavy country, in divided into large lines, colored by forest, farmland and meadow; embedded in hollows, leaning on slopes, little villages; a fat mountain on which a Trutzburg [a Castle of counter-defense] belongs; on another the old castle fortress one thinks one should hear Eichendorff's French horn sound… the artist shows an enviable versatility, because the picture with the Hohenstaufen [mentioned first] has an effect on the contrast to this more idyllic little town, like a strong-sounding epic, the thunderstorm that has swept across the summer landscape certainly contributes to this, as if to remind us of the difficult fate that befell the former lords of these heights.” Another mention the following December of 1907 in the Aus dem Schwarzwald (From the Black Forest), issue No. 12, Volume 15, there was a ‘Book Show’ advertisement-mention of new set of 12 lithographs which included a brief write-up of two of three Strich-Chapell’s beautiful chromolithos included in the collection of 12 lithos, and they stated about the “Rechberg u. Hohenstaufen” piece (Translated from German): “…The undulating highlands between Rechberg and Hohenstaufen appear to us in a fresh glow after a thunderstorm has passed, in the foreground the ruins of the mighty Rechberg Castle, in the middle field the lush green of the meadows in colorful alternation with the dark tone of the forests and the fresh brown of the fields, in the background the guardian of the landscape, the Hohenstaufen, with the little village nestling gently at its foot...” *The lithos were later taken over and published by R. Voigtländers Verlag in Leipzig (*See below).

Publisher/Printer & Chromolitho Info: The publisher info, location & inventory number, ‘R. Voigtländers Verlag in Leipzig. No. 404’, appears printed lower-left in the bottom outer margin corner on a label that was glued over presumably the original publisher’s printed info (found via research & mentioned above) which likely read, ‘Verlag Greiner u. Pfeiffer, Stuttgart’; The title in German along with artist’s name, ‘“Rechberg u. Hohenstaufen”: Von W. Strich-Chapell’, appears lower-middle; and the Printer’s name & location, ‘Kunstdruckerei Künstlerbund Karlsruhe’ (Translates: Art Printing Artist Association Karlsruhe), appears lower-right respectively. The Chromolitho is on a nice heavier-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock and you can still see the printing registration pinholes in the upper left & right outer margin corners—used to keep the paper straight (registered) on the lithographic stones for each color pass. You can read a brief biography on the R. Voigtländer publishing company below.

Brief Publisher Bio: Robert Voigtländer, Germany (German Publisher, 1847-1945) AKA R. Voigtländer Verlag was founded on September 20, 1847 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany by bookseller, publisher, printer & writer, Fürchtegott Leberecht Robert Voigtländer (1821-1887) where he mainly published regional literature as well as some of his own publications. He later acquired the Pütz Druckerei (Putz Printing Works) in 1867 and by 1874, Voigtlanders son, Robert Voigtländer (1849-1935) joined the family business and soon became a shareholder in 1876. On December 24, 1876 parts of the business were sold to Georg Barth, namely the publication of the daily Kreuznacher Tageblatt (Kreuznach Daily Journal) as well as the company Bookstore in Kreuznach. From 1883, his son, Robert had created a youth literature department with well-known authors within the publishing house, but soon sold it to Carl Geibel and Dr. Arnold Brockhaus, who formed their own company. Robert continued to expand his schoolbooks and other affiliated educational books as well as expanded other areas of their publishing with careful selection that brought much success to the company. In 1885, Robert Voigtländer’s brother Karl also joined his father’s company. The father died in 1886 and within a couple years, his son Robert relocated the firm to Leipzig in 1888. The company soon became well-known for its high-quality books and especially its chromolithographs ‘Farbigen Künstler-Steinzeichnungen’ (Colored Artists’ Stone Drawings) that were marketed inexpensively and sold to the general public as ‘Künstlerischen Wandschmucks’ (Artistic Wall Decorations) which were very popular and garnered the firm much fame at the turn of the 20th century.

In 1901, Robert Voigtländer (1849-1935) joined the Kunstdruckerei Künstlerbund Karlsruhe (Art Printers Artist’s Alliance Kunstlerbund Karlsruhe, [KKK]) along with the other well-known printing house of B.G. Teubner (German Publishers, 1811-2008) under contract for the publication and distribution of artistic Schnellpressenfabrik (Quick Press Factory) Printing. In the following years, the two publishers brought in around 400 lithographs with a minimum quantity of 1,000 each. They were offered at a price of 1-6 RM (Reichsmark) and reprints, as well as signed copies, cost 30-40 RM. By selling through the two publishers, members of the KKK were given opportunities to have exhibitions, various publications printed and most importantly, sales of their artwork. Exclusive hand-pulled and autographed prints were still manufactured and sold by the art printing facility in Karlsruhe. Eventually, Robert’s son Otto Voigtländer (1882-1931) joined the family business and later partnered with his father, becoming director of the firm in 1931, but sadly passed away that same year. After Robert’s Voigtländer’s death in 1935, parts of the business were sold off to Koehler & Amelang in Leipzig, and from circa 1940, the firm was known as Koehler & Voigtländer which managed to survive during WWII, but ceased operations in 1945 at the end of the war. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 22-3/4” x 30-9/16”, Image size is 21-3/4” x 29-9/16”. The Chromolitho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this wonderful piece—wonderful vibrant, fresh, rich color & tones! This Chromolitho has been in a drawer amongst other prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time…It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition, simply stunning & will look beautiful all framed-up! Ultra-minimal (maybe a handful or so) of extremely slight, tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are only negligible and barely noticeable in the small outer margin areas if you really hunt for them amidst some various colored printing ink-offset specks here & there too (none noticeable in image area) and they aren’t even worth mentioning as they are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Extremely minimal & very slight small crescent-creases & a couple light corner creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even noticeable (except very lightly from behind mostly) and aren’t worth mentioning either. Other minimal & slight creasing here & there in the outer margins and tiny dog-ear bends in a couple outer margin corners as well as only two ultra-tiny (less than 1/16” each) outer margin edge dent-tears in the upper-right outer margin corner which are both repaired from behind with archival tape for protection—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no significant toning of the paper stock from age noticeable, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This rare chromolitho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a beauty!

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
