First American edition. Tan cloth. 196 pp. Black and white illustrations. Doyle's analysis of the Cottingley fairy photographs, which he believed to be genuine. This copy belonged to mathematician/skeptic Martin Gardner, with a signed note from him in red ink to front free endpaper asking someone to return the book when they finished with it.


Rubbing and wear to exterior, with cloth frayed at spine ends and corners. Spine cocked. Bump to fore-edge of front board. Hinges tender. Rear hinge partially exposed. There are some pencil notes to front free endpaper from previous owners/dealers. "SCIENCE AND INVENTION" has been stamped to front free endpaper, both rear endpapers, and to several pages in the interior, and then later blacked out in ink (although not all instances). Some bleedthrough or offsetting from this ink in many cases. A couple instances of red marginalia. Occasional scattered foxing or small stains. Gutter partially exposed in places.
