Scottish Provincial Silver MASONIC Cowrie Shell Snuff Box c.1838
Scottish Provincial silver mounted cowrie shell, the lid engraved with a masonic emblem as well as R Griebe Alloa 1838.
There is a makers mark to the lid's inside but only the first letter which is a D can be made out.
Silver on outside is very clean but the lids inside is black and is not polishing up so thought to another material to strengthen the outer silver lid itself.
One very minor piece of silver missing on the edge (very minor), the front natural hole has a very faint hairline near it possibly caused at the time of the silver being mounted (again very minor).
When you wet the shell it has a nice glossy appearance but goes duller in places when it dries.
Measures 74x53mm approx.
An interesting piece with a Masonic connection.
