Iron Deficiency Treatment and Prophylactic Therapy During Pregnancy

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage and duration of therapy depend on the severity of iron deficiency:

Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Children (Over 12 years) and Adults:

  • Initially, 100 mg to 300 mg of iron (equivalent to 1-3 chewable tablets) per day for 3-5 months, until the hemoglobin level normalizes.
  • Subsequently, continue therapy for several weeks with 1 chewable tablet daily to replenish iron stores.

Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia During Pregnancy:

  • Initially, 200 mg to 300 mg of iron (2-3 tablets) daily until the hemoglobin level normalizes.
  • Continue therapy with 1 chewable tablet daily, at least until the end of pregnancy, to replenish iron stores and address increased iron requirements during pregnancy.

Treatment and Prevention of Iron Deficiency Without Anemia in Children (Over 12 years) and Adults:

  • A daily dose of 100 mg iron (1 chewable tablet) for 1-2 months.
  • For preventive use, Maltofer syrup is suitable if a smaller dose is required.

Note: Maltofer chewable tablets are not recommended for children under 12 years. Maltofer syrup and drops are available in more suitable forms (and concentrations) for infants and children under 12 years.

Method of Administration:

  • The daily dose can be taken in one go or divided into separate doses.
  • Maltofer chewable tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole and should be taken during or immediately after a meal.

Overdosage:

In the event of an overdose, iron overload or intoxication is unlikely with Maltofer due to the low toxicity of the iron(III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex. No cases of accidental poisoning resulting in a fatal outcome have been reported.

Additional Information:

  • Chocolate flavor for a more palatable experience.
  • An iron supplement for managing anemia.
  • Suitable for pregnant women.
