THE EARLIEST Cast Iron Patented Antique Antebellum Apple Peeler, PATENTED 1856, Lackey & Howland Co.

DESCRIPTION: Scan shows it all.....one of the earliest, rarest, antique cast iron apple peeler/parers EVER MADE. PATENTED IN 1856, ONE OF THE FIRST AUTOMATIC APPLE PEELERS EVER INVENTED!!! About 170 YEAR OLD, a Victorian "automatic" APPLE PEELER/Parer !!! Actually, a nice antebellum device, that was made years before the Civil War and close to the CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH!!

Nice early iron machine generally, with an interesting design. VERY INGENIOUS OPERATION. Cast in it, in large letters as shown, is "Manf. By Lackey & Howland, Patented June 17 and Dec. 16, 1856".

It works by turning a crank, through 4 geared wheels and a crank. There is a metal 3-pronged "spear" where the apple is skewered to hold it in position; the apple turns as the crank revolves. There is a replaceable blade on a springed arm that also turns following the contour of the apple, cutting off the peel. These peelers actually were designed quite efficiently, especially for such an early machine. This one is in excellent condition and complete. It appears to work and APPEARS THAT IT CAN STILL BE USED TODAY !!! It even has the springs that help control the cutting blade and the original blade. Also has the original thumbed screw on the bottom bar that tightens it to a table or bench to stabilize it.

Main wheel is 5" diameter. Measures about 8" x 8"  x 4". Crank is 2 " long. This can mount vertically or horizontally. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION !! HAS NICE AGED PATINA, and also makes a wonderful period decorator for the kitchen or other rooms.

You don't see this type of early machine very often in such complete condition, ESPECIALLY A MARKED AND SUCH A NICE EARLY DATED ONE. THIS IS AS NICE AN ANTIQUE APPLE PEELER AS YOU WILL FIND.

Nice early item from an old Massachusetts estate. A great early kitchen or display item, a unique novelty item, or it can be used.......GET THE APPLES READY !!!
