This is an antique black ( man made material which I have not been able to determine ) medallion in its original box which is Georgian period.
The cardboard box is original and the label on the top is good. It has
BY THE KINGS ROYAL LETTERS PATENT
Georgian COAT OF ARMS
AN AMULET MEDALLION
in memory of her late
MAJESTY
CAROLINE QUEEN
of
GREAT BRITAIN.
Inside is a matte black plaster or pottery material which actually could be Bois Durci of course as it was a new plastic like material they were making during this period.
The medallion has a black split loop which is steel attached to a small metal loop at 12 o'clock. The medal has a moulded wreath like design around the outside.
Obv. raised side portrait facing left with a legend CAROLINE QUEEN CONSORT OF GEORGE IV.
Rev. has Funerary urn in the centre with weeping willow behind and a cherub stood at the left side hanging a wreath. Legend BORN MAY 17. 1768. MARRIED APRIL 8. 1795. DIED AUG 7. 1821. then the word PATENT under the funerary urn picture.
Queen Caroline died in 1821. This item was obviously made after that as a souvenir of Queen Caroline but as to when is the question ?
The BOX is as rare and important as the medal. I have google searched this medallion and CANNOT find any comparisons. Bois Durci was invented in France about 1856 and this medal was probably made BEFORE then, so this is a different man made material than that then. So another bit of research for the buyer of this medal.
The medal Obv. and Rev. are designs that I have not found on actual metal medals either so more to study for the researcher of such interesting Georgian medals.
Letters Patent, I do have a few of those listed in my eBay shop but this is an unusual item relating to Letters Patent for sure.
