Here's an extremely rare laminated rosewood slipper chair by John Henry Belter, New York , 1855- 1860.  The finish appears to be original and in excellent surface for its age.  Belter is known for developing and refining the technique of laminating and bending wood . This chair back is fully laminated and shows a flair on the top half that is difficult to picture.  There's a crest of carved roses and a central motif of grapes, vines and leaves.  This slipper chair is 40 inches tall and 19 inches wide at the back. The seat is 16 inches wide at the back, 18.5 inches wide at the front and 18.5 inches deep. The height of the seat is 14 inches which is typical of a slipper chair. An average chair height is 17 to 18 inches.  The green velvet upholstery is old but not original and is in acceptable condition.  There are 2 John Henry Belter slipper chairs in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. One is certainly superior and both are prime examples of a chair like this one. Many chairs are purported to be Belter chairs. I certify that this chair is the real deal. Time to move it from my collection to yours!  Inquire about crating and freight shipping of this piece if you are serious. I have found out that crating and shipping will cost between $175 and $225 to most places in the lower 48 states. Again, inquire...
