Antique and vintage items make nicer than new gifts

Item

This decorative and interesting miniature dish is a lovely example of Fielding's Crown Devon lustreware with a high quality oriental-inspired pattern applied completely by hand in coloured enamels and enhanced with fine gold transfer printing.

Shelley and Carlton Ware are names that will be familiar to many collectors of Mid 20th Century ceramics and perhaps less so with Crown Devon. But like its contemporaries, it has been around since the latter part of the nineteenth century and has a reputation for producing a wide range of quality pottery.

The birth of Art Deco in the 1920s coincided with a range of technical advances in ceramic manufacturing and Crown Devon exploited the opportunities these

changes provided.  Collectors of Carlton Ware Rouge Royale will feel a sense of familiarity with the dish which could be described as Crown Devon's version of Rouge Royal and its lovely Chinoiserie 'Temple Garden' theme.

Date? Probably mid-to-late 1930s.

Condition

All our items have been previously owned and are usually between 10 and 210 years old. Inevitably (and often reassuringly) they show authentic signs of age and wear which we try to reflect in our images. In this case, the dish is in very good condition after probably some 90 years. There are no cracks of chips or anything else worthwhile alerting you to (see images)

Pricing

Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have been sold for on the UK and international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!

You will normally find that our prices sit somewhere in the middle between auction and professional dealer prices. We don't give items away, but we are always willing to consider realistic offers.

Shipping

We have a 100pc success rate for over a decade of successfully shipping antiques and collectables across the UK and the wider World. We only charge what the Post Office and couriers charge us and subsidise the cost of packing materials to try to make shipping as economical as possible.

International shipping? Since Covid, we have started to use eBay's Global Shipping Programme for parcels weighing more than 2kg because it has proved to be competitive and reliable. However, we also have access to an on-line international broker and if you would like us to check-out other rates, please ask us before buying.
