Two-Pound Metal Flagpole EAGLE with an 8 Inch Bent Wingspread
We bought this eagle recently from an antique dealer because I recognized it for what it was the instant I saw it. As a kid many decades ago, I saw a metal eagle identical to this one on the top of a flagpole among other things that came from the old E.B. Wood GAR Post in Long Prairie, Minnesota as I was helping to tear the place down.
It is a particularly nicely made old and highly-detailed 2 pound golden eagle with wings bent to the take-off position. We believe the eagle is made completely of brass and it is entirely non-magnetic. The patina on this eagle is that of a very, very old gilded piece so there is absolutely no question about its approximate age. It was definitely made prior to World War I (1914-1918).
The measurement across the top of each wing, from the tip to the side of the body of the eagle is 6 inches. From the beak to the bottom of the tail the back of the eagle measures 7-¾ inches. It is well-described and pictured on this eBay listing but if you have further questions, be sure to ask for an answer to them.
It appears to be composed of four distinct pieces that were braised together before the eagle was detailed and gold plated: the body of the eagle, the left wing, the right wing, and the half ball shaped base with the feet on it, which is inserted into the legs of the eagle body. The joint where the feet enter the legs of the body displays a crack but the pieces are nice and tight.
Our photos show the actual antique flagpole eagle that we are offering for sale. If you are looking for a beautifully American-made antique eagle you will look a long time before finding a nicer one than this, and especially at this price.
