Invariably I have simply added keywords in the title , please look at the pictures to see the full meaning of the humour. Each picture has a title and passage bellow.
This is in useable condition . These look lovely framed . The entire piece measures approximately 13.75 inches x 10.75 inches (or 35 x 27 centimetres) , the actual image is in the centre so this can be trimmed down . This is on paper and dates to 1903 , it has a little wear and there may be some marks and possibly fading . Please view the photograph. This is 2 sided and there is a political cartoon / caricature on each side of the sheet .
I am offering a large number of these Political Caricatures , they exhibit the humour that prevailed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century . This was taken from a publication called Political Caricatures 1903 by F Carruthers Gould , he was also known as Fly . This was published by Edward Arnold in London in 1903 .
Most are Signed fly .
I am unsure if these were lithographs or engravings , so I have simply called them prints of drawings , or illustrations from the publication.
These cartoons appeared from day to day in the Westminster Gazette .
They dealt with the current events and news of the moment , the year saw a great Fiscal storm , Chamberlain was the Primeminister . Affairs took primacy in South Africa , the Balkans , Russia and Ireland and the Education Act was topical , as was Army reform and the death of the Corn Tax.
Old Age Pensions were also being considered ..
The King was friendly with the French President M Loubet and there were resignations in the British Cabinet ( how history repeats itself).
Political figures also included Lord Roseberry and Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman .
Some of these issues may be present in the caricature offered , but I don’t profess to be an expert on linking cartoons to events from the period . I believe some of the pictures feature characters from Alice in Wonderland .
