DESCRIPTION

- An antique grey leather pendant/jewelry box with decorative gilding from the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd. (the Company was distinguished jewellers, silversmiths, dealers in diamonds and precious stones, electroplaters, and watch/clock makers). This fine-quality jewelry box (estimated circa 1901 - 1910) is lined with cream-coloured satin and velvet. It would complement a small pendant or locket beautifully.

MARKS

On the interior, in black lettering:

112. REGENT ST. LONDON, W.”

Some relevant dates:

- The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company was established by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman in 1880. The firm was active at 112 Regent Street, London

- The firm absorbed the Goldsmiths’ Alliance Ltd. in 1893 and became the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. in 1898

- “H.M. the King” referred to Edward VII, the King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India (r.1901 - 1910). Note: The Edwardian era is sometimes extended to the start of the First World War in 1914

- The firm was amalgamated with Garrard & Co. Ltd. in 1952

MEASUREMENTS

- Length: Approx. 66.2 mm

- Width: Approx. 46.5 mm

- Height: Approx. 20.2 mm

- The indentation/recess in the velvet can accommodate a pendant that is approx. 16.6 mm in width x 24.9 mm in height (not including the bail)

CONDITION

- Overall, the jewelry box is in excellent antique condition and still enjoyable for many more years to come. It bears signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Surfaces have marks and scratches that one would expect in a piece of this age. These ‘imperfections’ add character to the piece rather than take away from it

- The interior is clean and does not have any unpleasant scent. However, there is a slight discolouration to the velvet where a pendant once sat

- There is minor wear to the satin

- The jewelry box opens and closes well

- The lid sits ever so slightly over the base when closed

- There is a small clear spot of glue on the base

- All of the above are shown in the photos provided. The condition of this jewelry box has been taken into consideration and reflected in the listed price

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

- Antique handcrafted jewelry boxes are highly desirable and sought after. They are becoming more scarce, which means they are very likely to increase in value. They can vary in price with some ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars

- Much like antique/vintage jewelry, jewelry boxes also require some extra care to maintain their beauty and longevity. Some helpful tips:

   - Always handle boxes with clean and dry hands, as oil, dirt, and sweat can leave marks or damage the leather/silk/velvet, etc.

   - Avoid storing your boxes in direct sunlight as it can cause materials (such as leather) to dry and crack, fade in colour, etc.

- All props, including jewelry and other jewelry boxes, are for styling purposes only. They are not included in the listing unless specifically stated otherwise

- The item's condition is subjective. Please take your time to look through the photos, as they further inform the condition and form part of the extended description

- Please refer to the listed dimensions for an accurate sense of the item’s size, as zoomed images can disproportionately represent the size of an item

- All images are taken in natural light and are not edited. However, actual colours may vary slightly from your monitor. This is due to computer monitors displaying colours differently and everyone can see these colours differently
