Antique and vintage items often make nicer than new gifts

ITEM

This charming coffee / tea set by J and G Meakin features a beautiful and eye-catching poppy design that will add a touch of vintage magic to any home. The set includes a coffee pot, milke jug, sugar bowl, and six matching cups and saucers, all crafted from fine pottery.

The set is a much-loved design by an Engish pottery with a great pedigree for quality for over 170 years. Each piece showcases intricate detailing and vibrant colours, making it a perfect retro collector's item or a nicer-than-new gift for someone special. It's one of our mid-20th Century favourites.

Note that although this is offered as a 15pc coffee set, its full-size cups means that it can double-up as a 14pc tea set.

The history of J & G Meakin goes back to the 1850s as a manufacturer of earthenware at the Eagle Pottery in Staffordshire, in the heart of England's 'Potteries'. The company remained in the Meakin family up until 1968. Meakin and Midwinter Potteries eventually merged and the combined company became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1970. Sadly, the name Meakin was no longer used after 2000.

CONDITION

We can find little if any evidence of this set seeing much use over the last half century with the original coffee spout protector still there. We see no age or use related damage. The only thing we spotted under very close scrutiny was an out-of-sight, chip-like scar on the inside rim of the lid; however, it is under the glaze so clearly a tiny production flaw (see images).

PRICING

Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!

You will normally find that our prices sit somewhere in the middle between auction and professional dealer prices and the current market. We are always willing to consider realistic offers.

SHIPPING

We have a 100pc success rate for over a decade in successfully shipping fragile antiques and collectables across the UK and the wider World. We only charge what the Post Office and couriers charge us and subsidise the cost of packing materials.

International shipping? Since Covid, we have used Ebay's Global Shipping Programme because it has proved to be competitive and reliable. However, for packages weighing less than 2kg we are always willing to shop around to see if the Royal Mail's Airmail service can offer a better price - please ask us.
