Oskar J. W. Hansen (March 12, 1892– August 31, 1971) a Norwegian-born, naturalized American sculptor. Oskar J.W. Hansen is most associated with the design sculptor of the “Winged Figures of the Republic”sculptures on and around the Hoover Dam.

Oskar J.W. Hansen hand made with the help of his son only 50-100 one of a kind unique brooches in a variety of shapes including fish, horses, butterflies, dragonflies, & sea horses. This particular brooch is in a fish design with turquoise color fins & a pink eye. It measures approximately 2 1/4X2 1/2 inches. It is marked “OSKAR J.W. HANSEN SCULPTOR STERLING” on the reverse. There appears to be lightly etched writing on the reverse near the brooch pin hinge.

Important Oskar J W Hansen works also include “Wings” - installed in the lobby of the Rand Tower, Minneapolis, completed in 1929. “Liberty” - installed in 1957 atop a column in replacement to one that had been struck by lightning at the Yorktown, Virginia Victory Monument. “Liberty” commemorates the 1781 victory at Yorktown and the alliance with France that brought about the end of the American Revolution and the resulting peace with England.
