1943 pictorial of the Basque region of Spain and southern France.

Decorative map of the Basque region, including the towns of Biarritz, Dax, Bayonne, Lourdes, etc. It includes the town San Sebastian.

The map is filled with buildings, animals, a boat, figures and three local beauties in their typical dress. It is adorned with a large compass rose in upper left corner.

In lower left corner is “Imprimé en France” with a monogram of the publisher “BD.” The map carries a printed signature of the French illustrator who is only know by his pseudonym “Jylbert.”

The vivid color has been acheived through an interesting combination of the chromolithographic engraving and pochoir (stencil).
