This is an antique highly decorative full sized 3 foot tall presentation SPADE. It is made from silver plated metal mounts with a long spiralled hardwood handle.

The digging round nosed SPADE has been engraved with:

Presented
to
F.A. WOOD ESQr
Upon The Occasion of Commencing
The
Brent District Drainage Contract No. 1
October 20th
1884.

Maker's name is Mappin Brothers Regent St. which is on the back.

The handle has typical silver plated chunky mounts which are decorative.

The silver plating has been polished off over the years by over cleaning and polishing.

Brent is a borough in London.

Please see photographs provided for more details and visual confirmation of condition for yourself.
Normal signs of age and use wear including some surface scuffs and minor impact marks etc. It has a hole drilled through the shaft near the bottom where it has probably been attached to a wall at some time in its life.

The silver plating is worn from over polishing whilst on display probably.

It measures approx. 36 inches long, which of course is 3 foot tall. The curved digging spade is 9 inch wide at the widest top part. The wooden handle is 4 and 3/4 inch wide. It weighs approx. 1.4 kilos.

These type of ceremonial presentation items are UNIQUE and they didn't produce more than one of them. Ideal for the local social history collector / museum of the place names upon them or for related family members that didn't even know these existed.

Postage policies:

I use the eBay Global Shipping Programme for most of my items as this allows me to send items internationally that I would normally only be able to offer to UK buyers. Items sent under this system are fully insured the shipping price also includes any customs duties.

I do NOT have any control over the shipping or customs prices as eBay themselves set these prices.

Combined postage for multiple items:

AUCTION ITEMS "Usually when items are shipped through our Global Shipping Program it is not possible to combine separate orders as each transaction is given a unique reference code which is needed by our shipping centre to process orders.

EBAY SHOP ITEMS However, it may be possible to get an automatic shipping discount with the Global Shipping Programme by adding all your items to the eBay shopping basket and then purchasing. The eBay shopping cart automatically estimates any discounts for you, combining items where possible.
However only these item must be in the cart at this time and will have to be added in and purchased within a certain timeframe. If you have any other items in your basket the system will be unable to combine the order."

If this automated system does not apply the postage discount for you, please send me an eBay message and I will do my best to try and combine the shipping costs for you.

To see ALL my other 7000+ items for sale, please click on VISIT SHOP or see other items. Strangely, both options seem to only give a limited view of what I have to offer, so to see everything I have available, click on Shop by Category which will give you a much better view.

Scale is usually an English 1 penny coin which is 20mm in diameter which is just short of 7/8ths of an inch in diameter, or a universal sized Coke can (330ml).

If you see A/F = a/f in the title or description it means "as found" condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage. In relation to all my listings it does not mean " about fine ". I have used A/F  for " as found " for 45 years.
