Although
it was by no means top-notch in terms of performance, it was mass-produced,
easy to handle, and sturdy, so it struggled in ground attack and anti-bomber
combat.
The
P-40E was the first production variant with a total of about 2,300 produced and
made its maiden flight in August 1941.
Compared
to the previous Type D, there was no improvement in performance, but armor and
armament were strengthened to improve practicality.
At the
start of the war, the 8th Pursuit Squadron in the Philippines had 24 E-type
aircraft, and one of them, the 72th Pursuit Squadron, shot down the Type 17
(Ki-97) and produced the first ace of the U.S. Army in World War II.
