While this vintage Brooks Brothers small brown head gear looks like wood at first glance, it’s actually an early composite similar to fiberglass. I believe it's a helmet or safety liner for an equestrian, a bicyclist, a motorcyclist or a sportsperson. I especially like the textured brown exterior and the 1 inch subtly contrasting band at the trim.
The piece has no brim. No straps to keep it from falling off the head, and no obvious place where straps may have been. Inside has crisscross webbing similar to a football helmet. I believe some inner head gear may be missing.
Dimensions are approximate. 9 inches front to back, 7 inches wide, 5 inches high. Rim circumference is about 26 inches.
Inside label, with the Golden Fleece logo, reads MADE IN ENGLAND EXPRESSLY FOR BROOKS BROTHERS NEW YORK. The name Cam Moore is handwritten inside in 3 places. The inside sweat band, webbing and inside shell are stained from normal use. Please see separate condition section and enlarge photos.
I reached out to Brooks Brothers about this head gear, but they were unable to provide information. I'd appreciate any insights you may have.
Old, unusual (I can't find anything like it). And--in my opinion--handsome.
