Antique 19th century primitive hand painted tin tole document box from Pennsylvania, with ring handle on a domed top and working hasp. This box measures about 3 3/4" tall (excluding the handle), 6 1/2" wide and 3" deep. These boxes were called document boxes because they typically held a family's important papers or cash on the mantle, although since this one is small, it was probably the latter. This piece has an asphaltum finish, which is a transparent brown paint, with a red and green painted traditional Pennsylvania Dutch floral design on the front. It looks like there was some yellow painted scrollwork and border at one time as well, on the top and around the sides, but it is mostly faded.  The inside is unfinished tin. The hasp and hinges work well and the lid closes properly. Obviously the paint and the finish are very faded and scratched, but it looks to be all original and has great patina. This is a beautiful primitive piece that would look great in a room with traditional American antiques.

I have been a big toleware fanatic over the past 30 years and am starting to downsize my collection, so please check my listings if you are a collector yourself. I have both antique primitive American pieces and vintage 20th century romantic pieces as well, so you're sure to find something you will like!
