Petoskey is the county seat of Emmet County, Michigan with a population of 5,877 in 2020. Located on the southern shore of Little Traverse Bay, directly across the bay from Harbor Springs, it is one of the northernmost cities in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and is a popular Midwestern resort town. Petoskey lends its name to the “Petoskey stone” a fossilized coal that is the “state stone of Michigan”.
Before several religious groups established missions near the Little Traverse Bay in the 1850s, the area was long inhabited by indigenous people, including the “Odawa people”. The name “Petoskey” is said to mean “where the light shines through the clouds” in the language of the Odawa.
Amos Fox and Hiram Obed Rose were pioneer entrepreneurs who started selling lumber and goods to passing ships. Originally in Northport expanded to Petoskey which incorporated as a village in 1879 and a city in 1895.
This is a nice card, published by “Mrs.
A.G. Cook” and printed by “Curt Teich” sometime after the
incorporation. It looks to be a WB, c 1920s and chronicles “Petroskey’s
Municipal Play Ground”. It is in
good condition with minor wear and a clean clear image and reverse.
