Early 1600s shipwreck coins anyone? Own a piece of the legendary Vasco Da Gama's great grandson, Francisco Da Gama's treasure from the Sao Jose! The flagship was traveling from Lisbon to Goa with other ships, when on July 22, 1622, they were attacked by British East India Company ships. The Sao Jose was traveling behind the other ships in its fleet, which led to it being cut off from its fleet by the enemy, and attacked at full force. It survived the bombardment, even throughout the next day, but the damage only grew, as it sailed into a shoal which tore off its rudder. Many failed attempts at lightening the load and controlling the ship were made, but to no avail. The ship eventually sank to the bottom of the Mozambique Channel. Hundreds of passangers and crew perished in the disaster. Reportedly, 66,000 Spanish Reales coins were captured by the enemy, but the majority were thought to be lost forever on the bottom of the Mozambique Channel. That was until May of 2005, when the treasure was discovered. Here we have a gorgeous assortment of 8 reales from this historic treasure, one from Spain, Mexico, and Bolivia. It is estimated 23,000 coins were recovered, in which 7525 were carefully studied, of which 4390 were 8 reales. Only 972 coins of those studied were found to be Mexican struck by Assayer D, Diego de Godoy, such as our Mexican 8 reales. Only 153 studied were struck by Assayer M, Juan Munoz, such as our Bolivia 8 reales. Our Spanish 8 reales, although being the highest quality of the three, was not described by NGC with its assayer. This set comes in a beautiful Sao Jose wooden box with COAs for each coin. Only around 7200 coins were originally made available by Arqueonautas Worldwide.
