He is a specialist in the classic Het Volk, which he won in 1974, 1975 and 1980, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which he won in 1976 and 1978.He took part in six Tours de France, winning the 19th stage between Auxerre and Versailles in 1972. He wore the yellow jersey twice, for three days in 1974 and eight days in 1978. In the 1978 edition, he finished fourth overall, despite his size, which was not well suited to the mountains.From the start of his professional career, he was a member of Eddy Merckx's team, where he remained one of his most loyal lieutenants until Merckx's retirement.
