Where Can I Get Infill / Insulation? We can provide infill upon request at an additional cost or you can source your own. Our infill options are Hempcrete or Wood Wool. Prices of these infills are dependent upon market fluctuations. Can Someone Build This For Me? Yes, we can perform install services for you if you don't have your own builder. This will be at additional cost and will depend on market costs at the time of build. Why Do We Use Hempcrete Reducing energy costs Hemp concrete has very good thermal properties, so it is no longer necessary to use additional thermal insulation. This creates excellent thermal insulation properties of this building material and ensures thermal comfort inside the building. Healthy home The lime contained in hemp concrete is an antiseptic material. Lime has a high pH and is inherently antibacterial and antifungal, and the lime coating around each piece of hemp in the mix, creates a surface that resists mold growth, even when moisture and temperature conditions would cause mold on other insulation materials. It is free of chemical contaminants. Natural air conditioning The high vapor-permeability of this building material allows the walls to breathe, which protects against damp rooms. Hemp concrete regulates the temperature and humidity in the house providing an optimal microclimate. Very durable building Hemp concrete interacts with the wooden structure, so to speak, in symbiosis. The wooden structure provides concrete with support, and hemp concrete protects the wood: it allows it to breathe – which ensures the long life of wooden elements The combination of hemp shavings with alkaline lime prevents the development of mold, fungi and possible colonization by insects and rodents. Hemp concrete is subject to carbonization turning gradually into calcium carbonate(lime rock) Fire-resistant building Hemp concrete is non-flammable, protecting the wooden structure from fire. When subjected to continuous fire, it shows little change in overburning and has been classified as a fireproof material. Environmentally friendly Hemp concrete is a natural, environmentally friendly material is fully recyclable after use. Compared to other building materials, we need much less energy to produce hemp concrete, so it is a low recycled material. As a plaster for the interior of the dome, we recommend clay plaster because of the numerous pro-health properties of clay as well as the diffusivity that harmonizes with hemp concrete. We can paint such walls with natural diffusion paints obtaining any color from the color palette. Another proposed solution is the use of lime plaster or interior wood board. The design of the dome house was developed with great care and attention to detail. It takes into account not only environmental concerns, but, above all, is a kind of combination of a return to nature and modern technology. The outer structure of the building is formed from prefabricated modules, which are made at a specialized plant. The assembly of individual modules into the form of a dome is carried out directly on the construction site. The prefabrication technology adopted is a guarantee of accuracy and short construction time. An additional advantage is that a dome house in our technology can be erected practically at any time of the year. The construction of individual modules consists of spatial wooden trusses, the elements of which are joined together using both traditional carpentry joints and modern methods. The modules are connected by special locks. The filling of the wooden structure of the modules is wood wool or hempcrete. Wood wool STEICOflex 036 resilient mats are used to fill voids in roof, wall and ceiling structures. Produced from fresh softwood without harmful additives, they are neutral to human skin. Best protection against heat loss in winter, acoustic insulation. STEICOflex 036 has the lowest thermal conductivity coefficient – λD 0.036 [W / (m * K)], among all known natural thermal insulation materials. It is characterized by a particularly high volumetric density, making it an effective protection against noise. Healthy indoor microclimate, diffusion openness STEICOflex 036 is produced exclusively from fresh wood sourced from local, responsibly managed forests, is a vapor-permeable material, i.e. it allows moisture to escape safely. In simplified terms, the term “breathable construction” is often used. If moisture enters the structure, it can dry quickly and the building structure will remain permanently protected from the damaging effects of moisture. The best protection against summer heat. Wood fiber materials are distinguished by the highest heat accumulation of all commonly used thermal insulation materials. Hempcrete Hempcrete is a lime and hemp composite, consisting of cut pieces of industrial hemp stalk (hemp shive) mixed with a lime-based binder. It is a natural, healthy, sustainable, local building material with low embedded energy. Hempcrete is a good thermal insulator, is non-flammable and resistant to fungal and mold growth, and hardens over time. By binding CO2 from the atmosphere, it becomes calcium carbonate, or limestone rock. It has sound insulation properties and incredible heat capacity. It is a material containing cellulose – its ability to accumulate heat is far greater than in materials such as mineral wool. It provides thermal stability – we have warm walls from the inside, and heat loss is limited because heat penetrates the walls more slowly, and we save on energy costs. MANUFACTURING IS CUSTOM AND ORDERS TAKE GENERALLY 90 TO 120 DAYS TO RECEIVE WHY WOULD I WANT A DOME HOMES? HERE ARE JUST A FEW REASONS: The spherical architecture of dome homes fosters exceptionally efficient air circulation year-round, maintaining comfortable temperatures with minimal energy consumption. This unique design reduces surface area compared to traditional rectangular dwellings, lowering heating and cooling costs. Additionally, the aerodynamic exterior directs airflow around the structure, preventing unwanted drafts and optimizing energy efficiency. Dome homes strategically align with the sun's trajectory, maximizing solar exposure throughout the day and year, while effectively distributing heat and sound. These homes boast two key factors contributing to their energy efficiency: Firstly, their continuous ambient airflow eliminates stagnant corners, requiring less energy for air circulation and temperature regulation. Secondly, their high volume-to-surface-area ratio reduces material usage, minimizing energy expenditure during construction and climate control. With 25% less surface area per enclosed volume compared to other shapes, domes achieve unparalleled efficiency. Expanding the size of dome homes amplifies their efficiency exponentially; doubling the diameter encloses eight times the volume, showcasing their scalability and effectiveness. Furthermore, the inverted circular design facilitates rapid and even distribution of energy, ensuring consistent heating and cooling throughout the structure. Dome homes exhibit superior structural integrity, a legacy dating back to ancient times when durability was paramount. These features have garnered widespread acceptance in modern construction, revitalizing interest in dome architecture for futuristic and contemporary designs. MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Why are dome structures so efficient with building materials? The key lies in their shape, akin to a soap bubble. A sphere necessitates the least material surface area to enclose a given volume of space. Even a divided sphere ranks among the most resourceful shapes for a given floor area. What makes dome structures exceptionally robust? Their spherical design distributes stress uniformly across all points, offering resilience against environmental pressures like earthquakes, winds, or snow loads. Triangular geometry further reinforces their strength. How do dome structures minimize energy consumption for heating and cooling? Again, it's their shape that holds the answer. With significantly less exterior surface area (walls and ceilings) compared to box-style structures, domes boast greater energy efficiency. This reduced exposure to the elements plays a pivotal role, often surpassing the impact of insulation values. Additionally, due to their smaller perimeter-to-square-footage ratio, domes lose less heat from their foundations than conventional homes. Moreover, the curved surface of a dome facilitates natural internal airflow, enhancing energy savings. Externally, the dome's aerodynamic profile reduces wind resistance, unlike the flat barrier of box-style buildings, which can create pressure differentials leading to energy loss. What additional advantages do dome structures offer over conventional ones? Internally, domes offer more design flexibility, cathedral ceilings, and even distribution of light, heat, and sound. They excel in light amplification, contrasting with rectangular structures that tend to absorb light. Acoustically, domes distribute sound evenly and reduce outside noise infiltration by approximately 30%. What types of foundations and roofing is recommend? Foundation choices depend on terrain, soil type, and local codes, with standard plans available for piles and slabs. As for roofing, asphalt shingles are popular for their ease of use and affordability, though wood, metal, and spray-on options are also viable. What insulation options are recommended? For Gaia Dome Solutions we only recommend Hempcrete or Wood Wool. But you can use any of your choosing like, fiberglass or rigid foam are suitable, Alternatively, spray-in expanding foam offers effective insulation. How is insulation venting handled to prevent condensation? Hemp does not condensate and unlike box-type houses that require venting, dome walls filled with insulation eliminate the need for venting, preventing condensation buildup. What window options are available for dome homes? Skylights maximize space and accentuate the dome's architecture, while conventional and specialty windows offer versatility. What interior finishing materials can be used? We highly recommend using clay, as it meshes well with the hempcrete, you can also coat the hemp in lime and leaves a beautiful coloring and texture. If you must you can also use standard options such as drywall or wood paneling are compatible with dome interiors. What heating, cooling, and ventilation systems are recommended? Domes support traditional and non traditional systems like forced air, split a/c, geothermal heating, electric baseboard, or radiant heat, with plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems similar to conventional structures. How can one find a contractor to work on a dome? You can contact us and we can build this dome for you but any licensed general contractor should be capable of undertaking dome construction. Can the dome shell be assembled independently? Yes, we provide pre-cut and pre-drilled wooden components, making assembly manageable for unskilled individuals with basic tools. What equipment is needed for dome assembly? Simple tools like hammers, ladders, rolling scaffolding, and nail guns suffice, as Gaia Dome Solutions require no shoring and can be assembled without cranes or forklifts.
