This book describes my coming of age in Communist Romania, a land of austere economics, paltry individual freedoms but chockfull of humor and common sense. It continues with my arriving in America in the mid-nineties, to further my medical education. The red sash refers to the symbol worn by dictator Nicolae Ceausescu during one of his multiple poses, resembling royalty but transcending human decency.
